What are events?
Volunteer events happen at retirement homes in Gainesville and consist of several participants performing for an audience of the residents of the community and their family.
Who will be at the events?
The participants who sign up will be performing at each event. Every event will also have at least one experienced person there to lead the event and introduce the performers. Individual piece introduction is optional, but if the performers want to, it is a good opportunity to train their vocal projection and presentation skills.
How do I sign up for events?
To sign up for events, go to the Events tab and click on "Click Here to Sign Up," or click here.
Each sign up slot is 5 minutes each. However, if participants plan on playing multiple pieces or a longer piece, they can sign up multiple slots. There is no limit to how many slots one can take.
What should I play at the events?
Each event is about 30-45 minutes long, and each awards 3 community service hours. The repertoire played does not need to be complex; pieces played can be pieces the participants are currently playing, pieces they have played before, audition excerpts, etudes, or any sort of group piece, including sight-readable ones. Additionally, pieces can be played multiple times at the same location. Pieces also do not have to be long.
What should I wear to the events?
Dress casual. T-shirts and shorts, pants, dresses, anything works. The whole performance is very low stress and the audience is not judging at all and each event is designed as a stepping stone between practice and auditions/formal performances.
What if I don't have transportation?
We may be able to arrange carpools if participants don't have a ride to events, which will be organized on a case by case basis.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send an email and ask! We are open to suggestions for how to improve our society.
